Sommerleigh Pollonais, Horror Head Writer
Plot: After a childhood marked by a miracle, Narcisa, a novice nun joins a school to teach young girls.
Review: A prequel to the Netflix sensation that was 2017's Veronica, Sister Death takes audiences back to the origins of Sister Narcisa, the blind nun who the students called Hermana Muerte (Sister Death).
And there will be no thinking about men. We will have nun of that. Get it? Nun of that? You get it. Any how...
Directed by Spanish horror auteur Paco Plaza who helped create the Rec series of films and who also directed and produced Veronica, the first thing that drew me into this movie was how beautiful the cinematography is. Plaza is a genius at making small spaces seem large and adding dread in the most unexpected places. From the first moment Narcisa steps into the convent, I felt a sense of unease and these moments just keep on building throughout, giving the story an edge that I felt was missing in Veronica.
The slow burn narrative may not be for everyone, but I appreciated it as it couples perfectly with the building tension. And actress Aria Bedmar hit all the right notes as the young novice unsure of her place in the church.
Man. This Sister Act reboot is DARK!
Genuinely suspenseful and thrilling as it builds to its finale, this story is what I was hoping for when I sat down to watch The Nun. Matter of a fact, Sister Death knocks that paint-by-numbers predictable nonsense out of the water with a mystery that delivers a satisfying payoff and a prequel that fits within its existing narrative without coming across like an afterthought.
Score 7 out of 10
