Sutton is happy with her career as the town librarian and the friendships she has made however her family doesn't agree. With her sister's upcoming nuptial Sutton is once again being viewed by her family as not being worthy so she invents a fake fiancé. The only problem is that now she must introduce him and although she knows that River would be the perfect choice, she isn't sure how to persuade him.
River finds himself in Heartwood Lake trying to keep a low profile for the safety of those he cares about. He isn't sure why Sutton would have chosen him but when he sees the way her family treats her it only reinforces that he wants to be there for her but developing feelings for her wasn't part of the plan.
I enjoyed how protective and supportive that Sutton was of River. As they spend time together, they realize that they didn't really know each other at all and the more they know the more they realize that there is nothing pretend about their relationship.
