Honestly? Boring. I was bored. It took me ages to get through. And I only continued with it because I didn't have much else to read and minor details left me wanting to find out the conclusion. But it took a long time because I kept putting it down and not reading for days because I couldn't be bothered to try and get through it. Never really a good idea.
It was a strange few weeks where my interest wasn't engaging with anything very much and it was infinitely easier to either watch TV or listen to audio books. Added to that, the books that I did want to read, desperately, were taking an age to come through at the the library. I kept expecting them to arrive, then they didn't so it made it very difficult to get at all interested in other books. I couldn't plan. I didn't want to commit to reading one book in case the one I really wanted arrived.
The premise of the book was intriguing. A young woman with a complex history which is gradually revealed and explains who she is, how she got where she is. As well as little bits of stories relating to the people with the jobs of keeping her and saving her. Saving her soul, anyway.
It's based on true events. Agnes was a real person charged with murder. But, as with many things in history, it's never been clear exactly what happened or why. This is the story of what might have occurred.
That's it really, for me. Agnes reveals her story, bit by bit. It was interesting, it was sad, but for me, hardly the most exciting story I've ever read where a character gradually reveals her past. I've read novels with a similar premise that were far and away more exciting for me.
Others obviously found it more exciting. Maybe they viewed in a different light, read in different circumstances. It happens sometimes. Books can be widely popular but some readers don't understand why. The book was adapted into a film starring Jennifer Lawrence.
