I'm behind. Very behind. I finished listening to this audio over a week ago, so forgive me if I'm a bit foggy on details. The day job got in the way of me being able to post here.
The fourth book in the Seven Sisters trilogy, I quite liked this one. It was interesting, because Cece was noticeably more complex than the other sisters. She came across as not a very nice person, she wasn't shown in a very good light by any of the sisters. Even Star seemed to talk badly of her.
Although, I don't think any of them meant to speak badly of Cece. I think they were concerned for both her and Star. They badly needed each other when they were younger. One sister who didn't have the words to speak, the other who struggled to read and write. They really did need each other when they were younger, but Cece failed to recognise that at some point, Star would need her own life and she behaved in a way that was detrimental to Star's happiness. What they both needed when they got older, was to be apart a little more and to carve their own lives.
Cece eventually realised this. And after Star found her new life, Cece set out to find hers.
This time it isn't a straightforward "I'm off to look for my family moment." Not quite. Cece takes a detour first and has an interesting experience. That takes up a chunk of the story and it's not even massively part of discovering who her family is, but it's interesting and it is the start of her discovery. Then she heads to Australia to pick up the rest of it.
It's a sad tale, really. There's a lot of loss and sadness, and it all gets very complicated. I am starting to see a pattern in Lucinda Riley's writing, where someone marries the wrong person and there's an unexpected pregnancy somewhere. I suppose that's to be expected, with the book being about six (seven?) girls finding the answers to their adoption.
All the stories include meetings with or references to famous people and all the girls inherit some kind of skill or interest that connects them to a secret relative.
Interestingly, this book does not repeat the events of Pa Salts death in the same way as the others. Nor does it run parallel to any of the other books. Instead it takes off from where Star's story ended, with Cece waiting for a plane. Although Cece does recap some of what happened and explain a few things that only she knew about. It takes place entirely after Maia, Ally and Star have all discovered the truth.
The next story is about Tiggy and there was an interesting chapter at the end that definitely has me wanting to read the next book.
