Italy's Moreno Viglione is a guitarist, composer and arranger who has played on tour and in the studio with both nationally and internationally renowned artists. Stylistically, his playing has been described as "gypsy jazz", with flamenco elements, yet his electric guitar work also shows off rock and classical influences as much as jazz.
On recent tracks like "Action and Reaction" and "Cause and Effect", there's a free-flowing spirit to his dynamic compositions; breakdowns that combine blues licks with the spontaneity of jazz. The rhythm section accompanying him is certainly jazz, but with 70's psychedelic flavors in the tones and atmosphere they bring to the table. "Cause and Effect" has a playfulness to it that calls to mind a funkier "Cliffs of Dover".
On the other side of the spectrum, you can hear older songs like "Days Gone By" which lean more heavily into acoustic flamenco playing, taking inspiration from the music of his home country. Violins accompany his guitar, creating a mournful lullaby. Other songs like "September Mood" have a bounce that would be perfect soundtracking for a stroll along a boardwalk on a cool Autumn day.
Needless to say, Viglione is a versatile talent and one that should be on your radar. Take a listen to a couple of his impressive tracks in our World Watch Playlist!
