I have recently come across a wonderful Canadian children's book writer and illustrator, Benson Shum. His illustrations are so wonderful.
This is a picture book for kids about how one child doesn't want to go to the pool. Holly finds all kinds of reasons no to go the pool. The water may be too cold. There may be icebergs may be icy and there may be penguins and seals.
But are these imaginary reasons really true? Probably not. But the Holly the hippo keeps imagining the worse case scenarios. Her imagination bursts at every turn, making it harder and harder for her to set foot in the pool.
Then Holly decides to take another way of looking at her situation and especially her fears. What of instead of imagining the worse, she just lived in the present and took it one moment at a time? That's when everything changes for Holly. And she was able not to get completely wrapped up in her negative thinking and catastrophizing.
This is a great book for kids about a topic that's very important. Given the in-your-face media and technologies that we face, it's so important for us to be much more mindful. And this book will show the young reader how to do just that.
A wonderfully illustrated and written picture book for kids of all ages.
