In between being part of the biggest K-pop group on the planet, the members of Seventeen have found time to slowly but steadily develop side careers as soloists and sub-units. Unit tracks are usually divided between their Dance, Vocal and Hip-Hop teams, but albums have occasionally featured duo recordings as well. This is the first time the formation has been utilized for an official comeback, with members Jeonghan and Wonwoo taking the helm. I'm not sure what inspired these two to work together, though mega-fans probably have more insight than me.
Last Night offers a slick, evocative soundscape driven by plucked guitar and chunky bass. Rather than develop a hearty chorus, the track rests on a catchy synth loop -- the kind Seventeen themselves were particularly fond of around 2017. This isn't a new structure, but it's been out of the limelight long enough to feel somewhat fresh.
The balance between Jeonghan and Wonwoo's high and low tones works well, even if neither are given much to do. The bulk of Last Night feels whispered, almost as if the producers loved the instrumental so much they forgot to develop a full song around it. This results in a satisfying mood and successfully develops tension, but delivers little payoff in the end. I keep waiting for something big to happen, but the song is content to cycle around its few tricks for three minutes.
