This is a book for the young adult reading market that discusses how Larry Kwong changed the face of hockey.
Larry Kwong was the first player of Asian descent in the NHL when he played one shift with the New York Rangers in 1948.
Even though Larry's achievement happened more than 70 years ago, his contribution to hocket is only now being recognized.
Larry fought racism and discrimination at every step of his career. From his humble beginnings on the outdoor rinks in Vernon, British Columbia, to new York's Madison Square Garden and the NHL, this unstoppable hero showed that stereotypes and color barriers could be broken, and he paved the way for the next generation.
I just loved this book for several reasons. First of all, I love stories of people who have had a difficult time and not only made it but thrived. What a story of resilience and perseverance they portray. And Larry Kwong was one such person. What a legacy he left for the hockey world.
Second, I love books about hockey, being a good Canadian that I am. There is nothing like a story about a person who overcame so much to play this great Canadian game. Larry was a hockey trailblazer like no other.
This is a great book, and I recommend it to any younger reader who's interested in hockey.
