A safe haven between four realms and the girl sworn to protect it—at any cost.
Hidden deep in the mountains of Colorado lies the Inn at Havenfall, a sanctuary that connects ancient worlds—each with its own magic. For generations, the inn has protected all who seek refuge within its walls, and any who disrupt the peace can never return.
For Maddie Morrow, summers at the inn are more than a chance to experience this magic firsthand. Havenfall is an escape from reality, where her mother sits on death row accused of murdering Maddie's brother. It's where Maddie fell in love with handsome Fiorden soldier Brekken. And it's where one day she hopes to inherit the role of Innkeeper from her beloved uncle.
But this summer, the impossible happens—a dead body is found, shattering everything the inn stands for. With Brekken missing, her uncle gravely injured, and a dangerous creature on the loose, Maddie suddenly finds herself responsible for the safety of everyone in Havenfall. She'll do anything to uncover the truth, even if it means working together with an alluring new staffer, Taya, who seems to know more than she's letting on. As dark secrets are revealed about the inn itself, one thing becomes clear to Maddie—no one can be trusted, and no one is safe...
Bestselling author Sara Holland pulls readers into an enchanting world where both power and peril lurk behind every door.
"You have more happy memories than scary ones, don't you? Why give the scary ones so much space in your head?"
I started off reading a sampler of this book and got hooked enough to purchase the full book on my own. Though the beginning is a little slow with Maddie arriving at the Inn, I was really intrigued by the concept of all these worlds converging at this one spot. I loved how magical the setting felt and I desperately wanted to learn more about all these worlds.
The plot was fun as well. It gave a sort of fantasy murder mystery vibe. Aside from trying to figure out what was going on at the inn, I was also really curious to learn more about Maddie's backstory. That said though, I wasn't a huge fan of her character. She felt naive, too trusting, and easily manipulated. I think Taya was a great addition to the story. She balanced Maddie's character out and helped the plot move further along in the right direction.
I also didn't think the villain in this book was very well developed. He felt too one-dimensional. I wish his motives had been more complicated.
I'm a little curious to see how the romance develops in the next book and whether we'll be looking at a love triangle situation or not. Despite its flaws, I still had fun reading the book and really want to see how things continue. I'm hoping Maddie steps up more in the next book so we can see her as a true leader.
