I recently discovered this political thriller series by Rob Shumaker, as gripping a collection as I have come across in many years. President Anthony Schumacher is finally facing the electorate, having made his way into the Oval Office through a unique pathway. Poised to run against a sharp-witted Democratic congresswoman, Schumacher soon learns that there are whispers of an attack from south of the border. As he continues his presidential run, two unexpected groups come together to strike the United States and seek significant change. What follows is a chilling thriller that has all the elements needed for an addictive read. Shumaker does well once more with this piece.
After two years of serving the American public in the Executive Branch, President Anthony Schumacher is ready to face the electorate. Hs ascendency to vice-president came when the officer holder died and then he became the unlikely president when the sitting leader tried to have hm killed. Now, it is time to see what the people think and the Democrats are pulling out all the stops to ensure that this does not happen. Congresswoman Rosita Sanchez and her running mate, General T.D. Graham put their hopes in showing a more people-friendly presidency. The table is set and the clash will soon begin.
All the while, a small terrorist cell remains seething for much of Americas recent decisions to execute members of the cell. They have high hopes of bringing America to its knees by killing President Schumacher. However, they will not be able to do it alone and reach out to an unlikely ally. After decades of controlling the streets of Mexico through drug cartels, those in authority are also eyeing a strike on the USA. Together, the drug cartel and the terrorists seek to prepare a plan to strike, though they will need to be careful. Their communications are intercepted by US Intelligence agencies and the president is advised. He is not ready to stand down, armed with a penchant to win and a hope that he will be able to rush into the Oval Office with a mandate.
As the plot thickens, there is a plan to strike with an October Surprise of sorts. Vice-presidential candidate Graham chooses to head to Mexico on his own to foster an agreement and undercut the sitting president. While there, he ends up in some difficulties and there is little time to survey the situation before needing to act. With Graham in Mexico and the election only weeks away, President Schumacher is stuck making some importance decisions, some of which end up having highly unexpected consequences. A chilling thriller that sets the stage for more great political goings-on. Shumaker dazzles once again and keeps the reader hooked.
I love a great political thriller and Rob Shumaker has never let me down. These books work so well, balancing great writing and strong narrative foundations. Shumaker presents many realistic situations and keeps the reader following the action until the final reveal. While there are moments where too much is crammed into a short chapter or two, Shumaker gets his point across and keeps the thrills at the pinnacle of each story to this point. Characters are well-placed and developed effectively, allowing the reader to connect with them as they make their way through the piece. While there has been a strong focus on terrorism, I hope Shumaker hashes out some political happenings within the United States to add a deeper constitutional and legal aspect to the next stories.
The political landscape comes to life with strong plot points that are ever-evolving. This keeps the reader on their toes and wondering what is set to come. Peppering in some obvious issues alongside the political advancement, Shumaker surprises the reader with much that is taking place. As I said above, I am hoping for a more internal focus to the next book, which is sure to stir up some exciting aspects of the law, constitution, and politicking. Shumaker keeps the reader keen to delve deeper, which is a great thing and helps pass the time with ease. I will grab a few more of these books and hope for the best, as my series binge continues.
Kudos Mr. Shumaker, for providing a great thriller experience.
