Matthias Weischer "Shell" (2023)
A brief interview with German painter Matthias Weischer (b. 1973). He is associated with the art movement the New Leipzig School: a loosely grouped band of technically skilled figurative artists who came to prominence around the time of the reunification of Germany in the 1990s.
Here Weischer describes his painting Shell. I've included a video of the song he refers to.
How it reflects your practice as a whole: Real and imaginary spaces meet. Some elements come from observation from my direct surroundings, the studio. Other elements come from history. I start painting without an aim and I surprise myself with the results.
One song that captures its essence: Eine aufs Maul (Live in Berlin) by Danger Dan.
