Sequel to The Clark's Factory Girls, this book continues the story about the three friends: Jeanne, Kate, and Louisa. Their friendship remains strong even while their lives seem to be falling apart.
Jeanne's experiences sexual harassment more than once, a guy who showed her interest was really after avoiding being forced to enlist for the war, and the new engineer could be date-worthy, but will she get past the idea that he saw her being harassed? Her brother Lukas has also enlisted and gets hurt.
Kate has to deal with her drinkers father, who takes all her wages and only gives her a few coins to buy food for them to eat and expects her meals to be served even after her long day at work. She also does all the cleaning as if she were his servant. Then he has the audacity to move his mistress and their youngens in with them and expect her to wait on them as well! The mistress treats her terribly and she refuses to tell her older siblings.
Louisa is forced to move with Kate's older sister and her husband to another town to avoid living with her aunt. Louisa's pregnant and the father of her baby has perished in the war. Her parents insist she live with her aunt. Louisa doesn't want her baby to live with a stranger. Kate's sister and husband have not been able to conceive. Louisa will live with them and give her baby to them to raise before she returns home.
These girls are stronger than I imagine myself ever being. They're young and have such great hearts. To have friends like these girls, I'd be in heaven! I adore these girls and all they have to experience.
The three girls keep in touch and encourage each other to get through this terrible time. Jeanne tells Kate's brothers about how Kate's being treated. Kate's receives an offer to stay with her late mother's best friend and they get along so well!
I give this book and series 5 out of 5 tiaras. I thoroughly enjoy these characters and their stories. If I had to choose a favorite it would be Kate. She's suffered through so much yet continues to be positive and hopeful. Looking forward to what happens next in this series, gosh I hope there's a next!
