To move forward as a cohesive unit as the years go on is to find yourself in a select minority throughout the underground. It tends to be that such acts can only move so fast with the time constraints that life constantly throws our way be it family, occupation, or the simple fact that creativity can't always be churned out at a substantial rate. There are those, however, that manage to defy such confines and become names that are no less than need-to-know to the highest degree. On a meteoric rise that continues to this day, Eremit is more than such an act.
Ever since their debut, Eremit has been on an undeniable rise. After the release of colossal two-hour-long three-track monolith of fantastical heaviness that was "Wearer of Numerous Forms" just last year, I think it would be sage to say that many of us would have expected the band to have taken some time off in order to recharge after such a beast of an album that was a clear highlight for all things in the underground last year. However, it's become clear in just a few years that Eremit is not something that adheres to what we think a normal band is. Back after just thirteen months, Eremit's second EP proves to be a work that stands as a thematic break of the band's growing mythos while continuing their grand sound that offers no survivors.
"Rise of the Ruan~angh" is a call back to the band's earlier days whilst perpetuating the band's forward momentum that seems to have no end in sight for those eyes which perceive that blood within the desert sands. A tw0-track EP very much like their first, "Desert of Ghouls", it is within the 25-minute runtime that we return to the desert of Rap~pah where things have changed drastically with Eremit itself remaining consistent in its eclectic nature that perpetually holds nothing back. Just as pulverizing and immense as they've always been, "Rise of the Ruan~angh" is arguably the fastest we've seen Eremit since their earliest outings. Channeling the riffs and bloodthirsty energy that we've seen in tracks like "Froth is Beckoning" and the title track from the "Desert of Ghouls" EP (which I love bringing up, apparently), this work sees Eremit at some of its most hypnotic and downright intoxicating for how they carve out their vast expanse of war torn desert that is simply the most perfect backdrop to what Eremit has brought to the table once again. Pummeling drums, a trumpet that opens the horizon as wide as could be, heaviness that's as reliable as the light of the sun, and violence unbound by time or culture; "Rise of the Ruan~angh" dominates without compromise!
A real surprise of a release, it should be no surprise anymore when Eremit delivers material such as this, but one cannot help but be overwhelmed by such a performance every single time it comes around. Their streak as been unquestionable with their overwhelming dominance something that the underground has taken note of many times over, and "Rise of the Ruan~angh" only continues that. This EP is one hundred percent on brand for Eremit with it more than destined to become one of the year's celebrated releases in doom and sludge much like its predecessors.
